The objective of this department is to provide under graduate teaching and interns training programme. Department conducts basic research and various accdemic activities for the students. It also provides health services to the community through Rural health centre & Urban health centre for the welfare of the people.

1Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mukka, Mangalore participated in a scientific exhibition organised by Government of Karnataka at Pilikula Museum (Sanctuary), Mangalore on 19th & 20th September 2015. Under the leadership of Dr Animesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine Department, 14 students from 4th, 6th & 7th terms MBBS participated in the event. Models and specimens on Environmental Health, Non Communicable Diseases & Emerging diseases were displayed and sensitised the general public. A quiz competition for visiting students of various Schools and colleges, regarding prevailing health problems of public health importance was conducted by Dr Animesh Gupta. The Event was presided over by District Health Officer, Mangalore and the certificates were distributed to the participatory colleges.

2On the auspicious of World Heart Day 2015, Department of Community Medicine conducted Quiz and Poster Competition in Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mukka on 01st October 2015. The event was co-ordinated by Dr Animesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine. Dr Krishna Prasad, Dean chaired the event. Dr A B Halappanavar, Prof. & HOD, Dept of Com. Medicine, Dr Raghavendra Bhat & Dr Raghuveer, Department of Medicine, SIMS & RC were the judges for the poster competition. The response from the students was quite encouraging and 42 students took part in quiz competition and 35 students in the poster competition. The prizes and certificates were distributed to winners & participants in the event.

3On the observance of World Cancer Day 2016, Department of Community Medicine organised a full day event regarding Cancer in the form of Talk, Quiz, Poster, Speech and short movie competition at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mukka on 04th February 2016. Dr Diwakar Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor welcomed the audience and participant for the event. The event was inaugurated by Dr Uday Kumar Rao, Dean, SIMS & RC; Dr A B Halappanavar, Organising Chairman & HOD; Dr Shakuntala Pai, Professor & HOD, Department of Anatomy; and Dr Animesh Gupta, Organising Secretary & Assistant Professor. The event started with the introductory speech by Dean, followed by Talk on World Cancer Day by Dr Leena Salunkhe, Assistant Professor. Further events like Short Movie and E-poster Competition were conducted in first half. The post lunch event started with Speech competition and Quiz Competition conducted by Dr Animesh Gupta, followed by Prize distribution and concluding remarks by Dr A B Halappanavar. Overall 92 students participated in all competition. Around 40 students from 2012 batch were volunteers for the event and made it as grand success.

4World No Tobacco Day was observed on 31st May 2016 at Rural Health Training centre (RHTC) Valachil in the form of poster presentation and health education. The health hazards and information regarding tobacco was prepared in the forms of display charts & posters by the Interns namely Dr Amarnath, Dr Dhanya, Dr Dhriti and Dr Jeena. Around 96 students of nursing college and 30 local people attended the health education given by the interns & staff. The event was guided and supervised by Dr Animesh Gupta (Asst. Professsor) & Dr Shahul Hameed (Asst. Professsor).

5Heart- A- Thon
On the observance of World Heart Day 2016, Department of Community Medicine conducted a Marathon of 4 Kms. on Sunday, 25th Septemeber 2016. The marathon starts at 7 AM from Srinivas hospital, Mukka to Surathkal junction. The event was organised by Dr. Animesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine and 6th & 7th term students (2013 Batch). Athelete Mr. Vikas Puthran lighted the sports lamp. The runners were flagged off by Col. Ranjith Chacko & Ms. Sukrutha Wagle (Actor). Many doctors, students from srinivas medical college & NITK, and local public from Mukka participated in marathon. The prizes were distributed to the winners & certificates to all participants. -
6World Heart Day
On the auspicious of World Heart Day 2016, Department of Community Medicine conducted full day event, includes Talk on Preventive Cardiology By Dr. Rajgopal, H.O.D, Dept. of Cardiology, and various competition on 29th September 2016 at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mukka on 01st October 2015. The event was organised by Dr. Animesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine and 6th & 7th term students (2013 Batch). Dr Uday Kumar Rao, Dean & Staffs from various department, SIMS & RC attended the event. The response from the students was quite encouraging and all students from each term took part in skit, pick and speak, poster making competition. The prizes and certificates were distributed to winners & participants in the event. -
7Science & Technology for improvement in Environment Exhibition at Pilikula
Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mukka, Mangalore participated in a scientific exhibition “Science & Technology for improvement in Environment” organised by Government of Karnataka at Pilikula Museum (Sanctuary), Mangalore on 28th February 2017. Under the leadership & guidance of Dr. Animesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine Department, 32 students from 6th term (2014) MBBS participated in the event. Models and specimens on Environmental Health, child health problems & vaccination, and Non Communicable Diseases; live workshop on Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were displayed and sensitised the general public. The Event was presided over by District Health Officer, Mangalore and the certificates were distributed to the participatory colleges. -

On the observance of World Health Day 2017 – Depression Let’s talk, Department of Community Medicine conducted a programme, which includes Talk on “Importance of World Health Day” by Dr Animesh Gupta, Organizing secretary & Asst. Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine; “Talk on DEPRESSION – A practical approach” by Dr. Vrinda Kamath, Professor & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine; and “Clinical approach & Management of Depression” by Dr. Caroline P. Dsouza, Asst. Professor, Dept. Of Psychiatry. Dr Uday Kumar Rao (Dean), Dr A B Halappanavar (Organising Chairman, Prof & H.O.D), Dr Tara Shanbag (Prof. & Head, Dept. of Pharmacology) and other dignitaries inaugurated the event. The programme also includes the skit, debate, poster making and Mad Ads Competition. The response from the students was quite encouraging and all students from each term took part in skit, pick and speak, poster making competition. The prizes and certificates were distributed to winners & participants in the event.
