World No Tobacco Day
Every year “World No Tobacco Day” is observed on the 31st of May. This campaign against tobacco (in any form) is to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco and advocate for effective global policies to reduce or completely stop tobacco consumption. Each year the WHO selects a theme for the day in order to create a more unified global message for World No Tobacco Day. The theme for the year 2017 is “Tobacco – A threat to development”
To mark World No Tobacco Day on May 31st 2017, Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences conducted several activities to create awareness about the importance of quitting tobacco.
Program 1: Anti-tobacco campaign and oral health awareness program
The program was initiated well in advance by organising a public program in a Park at Kadri, Mangalore, to campaign against tobacco and create awareness regarding oral health among the public.
Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences in collaboration with Indian Dental Association (IDA), Dakshina Kannada (DK) branch organized the Anti Tobacco campaign and oral cancer awareness program at Kadri park, Mangalore on the 20th May 2017. The President of IDA DK branch and the Dean of Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Varma addressed the gathering and spoke about the ill-effects of tobacco. The district health officer of Mangalore also spoke about tobacco cessation. In addition, all the Dental colleges of Mangalore participated in the program. A dental exhibition was held, where the models and charts related to tobacco and oral health were displayed. The students and staff of all the dental colleges of Mangalore gave health education regarding ill-effects tobacco use on oral/general health and screening for oral mucosal lesions. Anti-tobacco banners and placards were displayed.

Program 2: Anti-tobacco signature campaign and mime show
A public awareness program was conducted at Sasihitlu beach, Mukka, Surathkal, on the 26th May 2017. Taking the unique opportunity of the national surfing festival at the beach, when people from various countries such as Poland, Australia and South America had visited the place, we organised a program to create awareness about the adverse consequences of tobacco use. People of all ages groups were present and were given pamphlet the read in English and local language Kannada. A mime show was enacted by the interns and students of Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences. A signature campaign against the use of tobacco in all forms along with oral cancer screening camp was also conducted. The public, organizing authorities of the surfing festival and the Coastal Police of Karnataka present at the venue welcomed and appreciated the program.

Program 3: A school program Street play, Mime show and awareness programme
On May 31st 2017 on the event of anti Tobacco day, the students , interns and staff of Srinivas Institute of Dental sciences, Mukka participated in Anti Tobacco drive with included street play, rally and conducted Anti Tobacco awareness at Holy Spirit High School, Mukka. The students and staff of Holy Spirit high school were educated about the ill effects of tobacco using placards, posters, models, street play and mime show. The Principal of the school and her team of teachers expressed happiness and appreciated these initiatives.

Program 4: Oral cancer screening camps
Oral cancer screening camps were conducted at several places in and around Surathkal (Mangalore), in the month of May 2017 as an initiative for World No Tobacco Day. Around 250 patients were screened for oral cancer and were educated and motivated to quit the habit of consumption of all forms of tobacco.
